What is the status of Kashmir in the eyes of USA and EU

I expect most people in the EU and USA have very little knowledge of Kashmir and no opinion about it. I doubt that 10% of the population could find Kashmir on a map.

The general policy of the West to territorial disputes that it is not directly involved in is there should be 1) cessation of violence. 2) bilateral talks. 3) The stability principle. 4) the self-determination principle.

As applied to Kashmir, this means that all armed actors should de-escalate, and for non-state actors that would ultimately mean disarming. The UK government has condemned both the attacks by Pakistan back militia on Indian Army bases, and the continued imposition of the ASFPA. That there should be bilateral discussions between India and Pakistan aimed at resolving disputes. Trump has offered to use his “extraordinary deal-making skills”[Pence] to broker a peace deal. The UK has stressed the need for talks, while noting that the solution must be created locally: there is no way for the US or EU to impose a solution.source

The stability principle is that, other things being equal, the US and EU position is to maintain existing borders. The self-determination principle is that, other things being equal, a population should be able to choose its own government. Generally, more weight is given to stability than self-determination.
